 The GRIT1-Nevada to Canada Downloads

We have released the 2022 Great R’Idaho Trail #1. The main route is now ~99.9% GPS track log based. The tracks have been carefully checked against the MVUM maps for legality, when available, and has been ridden for eyes on the ground difficulty and quality. So enjoy the work and lets go R’Idaho!

The GRIT1 GPX Files

These GPX tracks come in three versions.

  1. The colored version is for compatible GPS systems and easier map study to see where the trail sections and difficulties are. Thus, there are many tracks, so this version is difficult to deal with on some GPS devices. Many Garmin users can simplify this issue by using transparent track maps (see below).
  2. On Request. The mono-colored GPX files have one nominal track (Red) per stage to make it more simple to use on some GPS devices such as Garmin Montana. There is also a single track for each bypass (light blue) or special test detour (black).

Legend

  • Red: Designated motorcycle trails with Most Difficult/Advanced rating.
  • Navy Blue: Designated motorcycle trails with More Difficult/Intermediate rating or notably tougher ATV trails
  • Green: Designated ATV trails or just too easy motorcycle trails
  • Magenta: Roads. Dirt Road most often, but occasionally paved.
  • Light Blue: Easier Bypass Detours or optional side-trips to points of interest. This can be of any route type (trail, or road).  Only the first segment of the easier bypass route is color coded for this when the route splits while traveling in normal direction.
  • Black: Special Test Detours. This will add more trail miles to your stage and/or use more advanced difficulty trail. Only the first segment of the bypass route is color coded for this when the route splits while traveling in normal direction.

Version 22.0 Release Upon Request

The GRIT1 Transparent Map Install

This is a custom transparent Garmin map of the GRIT1 track. It is a great alternative to using the full set of GRIT1 Stage GPX tracks, but it only works with Garmin GPS devices. When the transparent map is transferred, and enabled on your Garmin GPS device along with your baseline topo maps, then you have a full resolution track to follow. You also do not have to enable tracks each day. Just enable the track map once and it is set for the journey with full zoom capability.  As a bonus, the tracks are also fully color coded to the type of route (motorcycle trail, ATV trail, road, or detour). The separate waypoint GPX file still needs to be downloaded to the Garmin so that you can select the waypoint and view details.

You can also create your own transparent track map yourself after costuming the GPX file. We use and recommend IMGfromGPX. For download and instructions, go here: http://www.javawa.nl/imgfromgpx_en.html

The *.IMG files should be copied to the  [SD Card driver letter]:\Garmin\  directory for your GPS on newer Garmin models that support multiple images map files. Then activate them as desired in your Map Setup option on your GPS.

GRIT1P Way Points Only GPX: 9 Stage

This collection of the GRIT1 way points is used along with the transparent track map. The track map is only the route. So download these to your GPS device as well to show way point highlights on your GPS device. These show more detailed info (like motel phone numbers), as well support auto-routing with turn notification to a way point if your GPS device offers that feature.

Helpful add-ons…Contact Info and Example Route Study Spreadsheet

The first download is a text file with a list of many motels along the route to help in making reservations/changes. Many of these motels are also shown as way points in the GPX files and the phone number is in the WP detailed info.

The second download is a detailed spreadsheet of the 2016 GRIT1 route made by #1 Pioneer finisher, Sean Cowen. It can be very useful to understand the details and study gas range options.
