The GRIT2 – Northern Loop Downloads

For this 2020 release, there is a major change to allow the Stage 4/5 to end/begin at the famed Gold Creek Lodge instead of Clark Fork Town. These tracks are almost entirely based on GPS track logs. Every track is carefully checked against the MVUM maps, when available for legality, as well as Google Earth satellite maps. But conditions and route closures can degrade without notice so be smart for what you find.  Enjoy the ride, but please report back what you discover and send your GPS track logs so we can make updates as needed.

The GRIT2 GPX Files

The colored GPX download is for easier map study to see where the trail sections and difficulties are. Thus, there are many tracks on this colored version, so it is more difficult to deal with on a GPS device. The monochrome GPX files (TBD upon request) have one nominal track per stage to keep it simple. There is also a single track for each bypass (light blue) or special test detour (black).  Both versions include all way points.

Legend

  • Red: Designated motorcycle trails with Most Difficult rating.
  • Navy Blue: Designated motorcycle trails with More Difficult rating or notably tougher ATV trails
  • Green: Designated ATV trails or just too easy motorcycle trails
  • Magenta: Roads. Dirt Road most often, but occasionally paved.
  • Light Blue: Easier Bypass Detours or optional side-trips to points of interest. This can be of any route type (trail, or road).  Only the first segment of the easier bypass route is color coded for this when the route splits while traveling in normal direction.
  • Black: Special Test Detours. This will add more trail miles to your stage and/or use more advanced difficulty trail. Only the first segment of the bypass route is color coded for this when the route splits while traveling in normal direction.

The GRIT2 Transparent Maps

These are custom transparent Garmin track maps for the GRIT2 route. There are 3 maps to avoid overlap of the tracks when one stages uses the same road as the next stage. It is a great alternative to using the full set of GRIT2 Stage GPX tracks, but it only works with newer Garmin GPS devices. You can make you own after customizing the route using IMGfromGPX. Download it here and follow instructions. When the transparent maps are transferred, and enabled on your Garmin GPS device along with your baseline topo maps, then you have a colored, full resolution track that is easier to manage.

To install, connect to your GPS over USB in mass storage mode. Then copy these *.img files to:

[SDcard  Driver letter]:\garmin\

To uninstall, delete these files from the same locaiton

GRIT2 Way Points Only GPX

This collection of the GRIT2 way points is used along with the transparent track map. The track map is only the route. So download these to your GPS device as well to show way point highlights on your GPS device. These show more detailed info (like motel phone numbers), as well support auto-routing with turn notification to a way point if your GPS device offers that feature.

Contact Info

This is a text file with a list of many motels along the route to help in making reservations/changes. Many of these motels are also shown as way points in the GPX files and the phone number is in the WP detailed info.
